Panerai 2002 Round The Island Race – 17 November
2002
Terence Lam with crew aboard his solo circumnavigating yacht “Cadenza” participated in this event, the largest sailing race in
the HK calendar.

8.30 am start in the harbour under light winds. Cadenza was one of the first yachts
across the startline.

With an inner and outer startline and all manner of about 140 sailing craft the start with HK skyline is very spectacular!

Almost all boats were becalmed at Lei Yue Mun Pass – the faster boats getting away quickly in such light conditions.

Luckily the tide was pushing us in the direction we needed to go!

Once through the Pass we raised the spinacker heading towards the marker off Tai Tam.

Winds picked up to a brisk 23 knots closehauled under full sail after Beuford Island. Some of the smaller craft seemed to be
having trouble in these conditions - Cadenza with a full displacement keel and built for offshore cruising enjoyed the conditions.

Terence Lam at the helm under light winds tacking towards the Junk Bay marker.

Under spinacker with light winds heading towards the finish line (returning towards start line) just off Kellet Island, Central.
We finished around 4.40 pm just making cutoff for retirement at 5 pm.
Event was won under handicap by a Pandora – seen surfing!! Overall line honours went to multihull “Atmosphere.” Prizes all
around – including for the biggest screwup (for a dinghy not putting in the bungs before launching!).
Everyone had a great day! Our grateful thanks to the organizers, RHKYC, and sponsors.
